New Themes in DLB Moodle

This information is for teachers, using the DLB Moodle (available to schools in South Australia) and would like to import and use new themes.

Moodle comes preinstalled with a number of themes. Additional themes are available at http://moodle.org/mod/data/view.php?id=6552 . Download and unzip the theme that you like. Next, you will have to upload the folder containing the theme to the dlb moodle site. Do do this, you would need an FTP program. A good one to use is FileZilla and it is free. Download and install the program.

Run the FileZilla program Then select File, followed by Site Manager (or click the Site Manager icon, which is the first icon on the Toolbar).

Technology can be used to create Engaged Learners who are:

  • Responsible for their own learning.
  • Energized by learning.
  • Work collaboratively (locally and globally).
  • Investigate authentic problems & solve them.

Technology should be used by teachers to teach Science, Social Studies etc. Teachers must be shown how to do this, using data analysis and other tool.
The best way to encourage teachers to use technologies is to give them personal experiences and examples of the use of technologies in the classroom and in thier subject areas.
Teachers should engage in researching authentic problems such as ‘Global Warming’, with their students.
A effective teacher rarely solves student’s problems, so as to develop independence and autonomy.
Teachers must visit workplaces to see for themselves how technologies are used there.
Teachers can use the skills of tech savvy students (both boys and girls) as aides to support them in their use of technologies in the classroom.
Teachers must be given more time each year to develop learning activities incorporating the new technologies.

Miketemple123 Edublogs Tutorials site has many useful tutorials on using edublogs. If you know how to embed photos, videos, audios etc, then this is a site that you must visit. You have links to many useful educational videos. There is a link to Maths Video lessons, BBC Education news and of course, tutorials on how to use Edublogs (and I am sure that you are using one, and it is free to all teachers).

Below is a tutorial on using vodpod in your blog. Please visit his site for many more useful videos.

Setting up a vodpod – for video

March 2nd, 2007 by miketemple123

Vodpod is a great way to show videos directly in your blog. No downloading needed for the viewer

  1. go to www.vodpod.com and register – it’s free
  2. give your vodpod site a name – like a username
  3. you probably have one already – remember, it will show on your home page
  4. when the site opens up, click on start a new pod
  5. give the pod a name – you can change this later
  6. it automatically adds this to the url – just leave it as it is
  7. you can upload your own videos to this pod, or add other pods as needed
  8. Now the clever bit
  9. click on widgets
  10. go to the bit with bookmarklets
  11. simply drag the button onto your browser toolbar
  12. then when you see an online video like youtube
  13. simply click this button
  14. choose the pod
  15. this will then automatically add the video to your pod – and update the pod on your blog
  16. to get the pod on your blog
  17. stay in widgets
  18. on lhs, simply select the pod from the menu
  19. go down the page
  20. copy the code
  21. go to your post on the blog
  22. click on html
  23. paste the code in save and publish as normal
  24. you should have a player on the page

Sharing Station offers safe, FREE video sharing for educators. Link to your videos, or embed them in your web pages. Add Video, Documents, Pictures, and Audio (MP3). More important, it is most likely NOT blocked in schools, like the YouTube. ,

Although it is still in its final stages of beta testing, you can join and start using it. It has no advertisements and they claim that it will remain FREE.

It also has the option of grouping videos, audios forming a lesson list. Looks very promising.

Wetpaint Wiki

wetpaintlogo.png

I had used Wetpaint wiki since its beginning and it was a good looking and easy to use wiki. One problem with it was the presence of a large number of advertisements. The Wetpaint wikis are now ad-free for educational sites and that is a good news for all educators.

Who qualifies for an ad-free wiki?

The following uses of education wikis qualify for ad-free status:

  • Middle/High School, University, and Grad School Classrooms (ages 13+)
  • Group projects and assignments given by a teacher as part of a class curriculum
  • Dissertations, portfolios, and other displays of students’ work in school
  • Wikis created by educators to connect with parents

How to Apply

If you haven’t already, create your wiki, then send an email to education@wetpaint.com and include the following information:

  • Your school name and address
  • A short description of how you are using the wiki
  • The URL of your education wiki

Why not give it a go? Create a wiki for your class today.

YouTube for teaching and learning?

YouTube draws users into the experience of viewing videos and engaging with the content as commentators and creators, activities that heighten students’ visual literacy—an important skill in today’s electronic culture.Even if most of the content on YouTube lacks an educational goal, the application encourages experimentation with new media. Many educators believe that the act of creating content—in virtually any form—is a valuable learning exercise, helping develop a deeper understanding of the subject matter and the tools used to create that content. To the extent that YouTube facilitates such creation, it has the potential to expose students to new insights and skills, as well as link them to various online communities.

As a social-software application, YouTube is part of a trend among Net Generation students to replace passive learning with active participation, where everyone has a voice, anyone can contribute, and the value lies less in the content itself than in the networks of learners that form around content and support one another in learning goals.
